Shakespeare and the Reformation
In the year of the Reformation anniversary, the annual conference of the German Shakespeare Society from 20 to 23 April 2017 in Weimar will be dedicated to the topic of “Shakespeare and the Reformation”.
Hardly any other playwright of the 16th and 17th centuries dealt with the role of religion, its ambivalences and its functions for the cultural self-image of a society more thoroughly than Shakespeare. Our conference focusses on the upheaval of the Reformation and looks at its reflection in Shakespeare’s work and its cultural context. Against the backdrop of Shakespeare’s plays, discussions and lectures will continue to focus on current issues of theatre and society in the context of the Reformation.
