Money and Power
The German Shakespeare Society, in cooperation with the Cultural Department and the Literaturhaus München, cordially invites you to the 2013 Spring Conference, which will take place in Munich from April 26-28. Under the current theme “Money and Power: Shakespeare’s Balance Sheets”, it will once again offer a wide range of events, including lectures, workshops, discussions, the Shakespeare & School Forum, the Academic Seminar and, of course, current productions and performance discussions; partners for this are the Residenztheater, the Munich Kammerspiele and the theater “Much Ado About Nothing” in the Pasinger Fabrik, which is staging Timon of Athens. This rarely performed play is of particular relevance to our conference theme: none other than Karl Marx was deeply impressed by how “excellently” it explores the “essence of money” in order to demonstrate the “general confusion and reversal of things”.
So what does Shakespeare’s stage commerce show us about power relations, rich and poor and the true value of things? How does he turn capital into great world theater? And what information can Shakespeare’s works provide about current market and currency crises? We will be discussing these questions with international academics and prominent speakers. Due to the limited hotel contingents, we strongly recommend booking accommodation now; the exact schedule, which begins with a kick-off evening on April 25 and includes a cultural program, will be announced in January 2013.
Here you can download the flyer with the invitation, programme and registration and the president’s invitation letter.
