Scholarship programme of the German Shakespeare Foundation in cooperation with the Klassik Stiftung Weimar (graduate scholarship)
The application deadline is 31 January.
The scholarships are aimed at doctoral candidates with an excellent university degree who can demonstrate a conceptual connection between the research project to be realised in Weimar and their dissertation. The newly established graduate scholarships focus on the early modern period in the broader sense, including the Baroque period and the processes of its reception and transformation up to the present day. Interdisciplinary and comparative projects on theatre, Shakespeare and his contemporaries as well as on the transmission and reception of the early modern period in Germany and especially in Weimar Classicism are also particularly welcome. Funding is available for ambitious projects for the realisation of which the collections of the Klassik Stiftung are essential.
Funding period and scholarship rate
The funding period is two to three months. Two scholarships of up to 2,000 euros per month are awarded once a year.

Accommodation and insurance
The office of the German Shakespeare Foundation will be happy to assist you in finding accommodation.
The Shakespeare Scholarships include free admission to all institutions of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar.
According to current tax regulations, the Shakespeare scholarship is not subject to income tax or pension insurance.
Foreign scholarship holders and those travelling from abroad must have health insurance that covers any treatment costs incurred in the Federal Republic of Germany.
Proof of this must be submitted before commencing the scholarship. The scholarship may not be started without insurance coverage.
Obligations of scholarship holders
The scholarship holders carry out their studies in the institutions of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar. During their stay in Weimar, they take part in regular colloquia. They agree to present their current research project to the interested public in a generally understandable lecture.
At the end of their stay in Weimar, but no later than four weeks after the end of the scholarship, the scholarship holders are asked to submit a work report and answer a few supplementary questions (see downloads for form). In particular, the report should describe the results of the research activities in Weimar and outline the objects in the collection that were relevant for the research projects. Suggestions for the further development of the Shakespeare scholarship are very welcome.
The scholarship holders undertake to make appropriate reference to the funding provided by the German Shakespeare Foundation in all publications resulting from the research stay in Weimar. The following wording should be used: “This study was supported by a grant from the German Shakespeare Foundation”. The German Shakespeare Foundation must be provided with a specimen copy of every publication resulting from the Weimar research stay.
Revocation of the Shakespeare scholarship
The approval of a scholarship can be revoked at any time if the information in the application documents is incorrect or the obligations entered into are not honoured. If a scholarship holder does not submit their work report on time, the German Shakespeare Foundation will demand partial repayment of the scholarship. In the event of a change in personal or financial circumstances during the stay in Weimar, the scholarship can be adjusted at short notice.
