Scholarship recipients

Dr. Julia Jennifer Beine
Dr. Julia Jennifer Beine is the first recipient of the Shakespeare Scholarship. From April to June 2024, she researched the topic “The Schlegel-Tieck translation of Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar” in its literary and historical context”.
Julia Jennifer Beine studied Classics, General and Comparative Literature and History at the Ruhr University Bochum, where she completed her doctorate in 2023 with an interdisciplinary project in Latin Philology. In the winter semester 2023/24, she held the professorship for Digital Humanities at the Institute for Greek and Latin Philology (Prof. Dr Frank Fischer) at the FU Berlin. In her research projects, she uses interdisciplinary methods to investigate European drama from antiquity to the modern era and the reception of Greco-Roman literature from the 16th to the 21st century. Another focus of her work is digital methods in philology and literary studies. At the Klassik Stiftung Weimar, she is analysing the Schlegel-Tieck translation of Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar” in its literary and historical context.
An excerpt from her report (translated): “
Thanks to the Shakespeare scholarship, I was able to carry out my research project in a stimulating working environment. In the study centre of the Herzogin Anna Amalia Bibliothek, I worked with the holdings of the Shakespeare collection, which provided the relevant literature for my project. The research colloquium at the Klassik Stiftung Weimar also enabled me to exchange ideas with colleagues and offered exciting insights into the research projects of the other fellows in Weimar. A particular highlight was the city of Weimar itself: its diverse cultural scene, its postcard-perfect facades and its inviting parks. The Shakespeare statue there is also a must-see for Shakespeare enthusiasts.”
