Troilus and Cressida
The autumn conference will centre on Troilus and Cressida, or, to quite Michael Dobson’s paper title, „the most unperformed performed play in world drama“. Addressed to an „eternal reader“, placed between tragedies and histories in the Folio Edition, often referred to as problem play or „bitter war comedy“ – Troilus and Cressida is a play that asks many questions and offers countless perspectives for interpretation, not just concerning its genre. With its focus on politics, power, egotism, profit and a grinding war, Troilus and Cressida is harrowingly topical. It is time to put this complex drama at the centre of one of our autumn conferences.
