The programme is framed by Shakespeare’s MIDSUMMER NIGHT’s DREAM: at the opening on Wednesday, 19 August at 7.30 p.m. and at the end on Sunday, 30 August at 6.00 p.m., four young lovers stumble through the undergrowth of a nocturnal forest as if in a frenzy – because the elf king Oberon and Puck are teasing the disoriented Athenians. Where better to immerse yourself in Shakespeare’s dream-like world of light and shadow than in the approaching twilight of a late summer evening in the Bürgerpark?

On the second day, Thursday, 20 August, the legendary power struggle between two queens will make the wood of the Bürgerpark stage shake. Will the English Queen Elizabeth I sign the death sentence that has been passed on her Scottish adversary MARIA STUART? Her decision will change the course of history forever…

The WINTER FAIRY TALE on Friday, August 21 at 6:30 p.m. will be more cheerful. The coldness that King Leonte’s delusion of jealousy brings to Sicily develops hopefully and comically until the brightest sunshine – and in the end, love, remorse and forgiveness even overcome death.

It gets dark at the subsequent late performance of MACBETH on Friday, August 21 at 10 p.m., staged in original Shakespearean English. Ever since the three witches prophesied the royal crown to Macbeth, he has found himself in an endless spiral of greed and mistrust. His misguided decisions bring misery, pain, and death to all. Pale wafts of fog, flickering lights, shadowy figures – and the dark treetops in the shadow of the night complement the stage set to create a perfect backdrop.

The audience can experience a lavish party on Saturday, August 22, when sparks – and fringes – fly at the big masked ball of MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING. Intrigues and obfuscations, cheeky subtleties and malicious love affairs – at some point, no one here knows whom to trust, and why you actually love whom. Will everyone’s fate still turn to happiness in the end?

On Sunday, August 23rd, the ensemble will dive into Greek mythology together with the audience: out of love for Jason, MEDEA has left everything behind, robbed and cheated, killed and murdered. But when Jason rejects her, a thirst for revenge ignites inside her that will destroy Jason and her own life…

“Und es wallet und siedet und brauset und zischt, WIE WENN WASSER MIT FEUER SICH MENGT”: the title of the guest performance on Monday, August 24, already promises something explosive. Sebastian Kautz and Gero John from Bühne Cipolla explore Friedrich Schiller’s eloquent ballads, enliven them with dramatic emphasis, live music and puppetry, while at the same time freeing them from romantic clichés and examining them for today’s relevance.

JULIUS CAESAR is about political rule, violence and morality. On Tuesday, August 25, the amateur acting group of the bremer shakespeare company Die ArtVerwandten will present their production of the famous material together with the 1st Bremen Ukulele Orchestra. After the production, the ukuleles bring a rousing concert to the stage.

The next day, on Wednesday, August 26, Virginia Woolf sends her title character ORLANDO on a 300-year, eventful journey through life. Across social conventions, this journey not only questions the dimensions of time.

Of course, the most famous love story in the world should not be missing: ROMEO AND JULIET. Music permeates the streets of Verona, crickets chirp, a bird calls in the distance – the sounds of a beatboxer underline Shakespeare’s linguistic power and the atmosphere of the play in this successful production. But police sirens and screams break through the night, street fights flare up, staffs collide: the bitter enmity of the Capulets and Montagues divides the entire city – and claims victims. Shakespeare’s tragedy can be seen on Thursday, August 27 and Friday, August 28.

On Saturday, August 29, the air tingles and burns: in the Summer of Love 1967, two young dreamers hungry for new beginnings fall in love in a cheerful hippie look. What will become of their love when their idealism has dissolved into egoism and neoliberalism 30 years later? LOVE LOVE LOVE humorously takes a look at the complexity of human encounters and social movements and creates a summery flower power mood.
