Idolatry or appropriation? Two cases of German Shakespeare reception

When Grand Duchess Sophie founded the “Association of Friends of Shakespeare” on the occasion of her 40th birthday, she laid the foundation for the founding of the German Shakespeare Society in Weimar a few weeks later. This year’s anniversary celebrations therefore provide an opportunity to once again recall the importance of Shakespeare for the development of German drama and theater – despite the well-known sigh from Goethe’s time: Shakespeare and no end!
