Spring Conference 2015, Berlin

Shakespeare’s Heroes and Heroines

The German Shakespeare Society cordially invites you to the 2015 Spring Conference, which will take place in Berlin from April 23-26. Under the current theme of “Heroes and Heroines in Shakespeare”, it is once again offering a variety of events, including lectures, discussions, the Shakespeare & School Forum, the Academic Seminar and, of course, current productions and performance discussions; partners for this are the Free University of Berlin, the Ernst Reuter Society and the Working Group of Literary Societies.

Shakespeare has created some of the most dazzling heroic figures in his absorption and transformation of ancient and Christian tradition and made them immortal. At the same time, he explored the profound ironies and ambivalences of the heroic like hardly anyone else. The conference examines these formations of the heroic, its modes of representation, its functionalization and, at the same time, its inherent problems. Leading experts in Shakespeare research, medieval studies and theater studies from England, Germany and the USA have been invited as speakers.
With productions of Two Gentlemen from Verona and Hamlet at the Berliner Ensemble, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet and Was Ihr Wollt at the Deutsches Theater and a performance of Hector Berlioz’ Roméo et Juliette at the Deutsche Oper on Wednesday, 22 April, the Berlin theaters offer us a rich program.

Here you can download the flyer with the programme and registration form, the invitation of the president, and the programme and abstracts of the Shakespeare Seminar.
